Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
