Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Spot.

Initially, this album could seem more like a challenging university quiz than the latest popular music album by a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Split across four distinct sections and sung in 13 tongues, this is a breathtaking classical-tinged album that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently via the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with raw honesty elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the work of other pop stars appear quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly intellectual posturing is nearly miraculous, and sole praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to blend historical sounds and modern styles, its ambitions are far greater here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Much like the legendary Björk during her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you into its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart in two, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there for the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines clearly on a stirring piano-led song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and there's a spontaneous giggle and a comment before a comically exaggerated orchestral surge crashes down with cartoonish impact. The song then shifts into the wild single featuring racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener never quite understand—or even wish to know—what it is going to next."

Almost each song concludes at a completely different point than how it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing her previous trap-infused work begins out moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement of the album is straddling the line of radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in English swells on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks as it spins skyward. That trick is echoed on another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in excess. It is a deep source of buried gems that requires patience to fully mine but never feels like hard work. Where some major pop albums of the year seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the guests around it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
