The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
