This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
