The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the right to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
